Did You Know
Sandra Silk started her career as one of the only women spinning records as a Disc Jock “DJ” in 1984. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to compete with male DJs during that time. She met Manny Molden Jr., the host of Lighter Side of Jazz and Blues on 88.9 FM who had a reputation of working with women who wanted to get into radio.
In 1990, she worked with Manny for a month while she worked as a DJ at all the major venues. People came from all over to see Sandra DJ because they were fascinated with seeing a woman spin records. Bill Taylor, from Channel 4 WTMJ, walked up to Sandra during one of her events and asked her was she interested in radio and introduced her to Ella Smith which was the Public Relations Director at 1290 WMCS at the time. Sandra jumped on the opportunity and in 1990, she replaced Jim Frazier and teamed up with Phil Anderson playing the Blues.
Although she had a lot of challenges being the only woman playing the Blues, she always kept in mind, “Whatever God has for you, you will receive it”. She was told by Manny Molden that she could never get her own radio show but Billy Young, the Program Director at 1290 WMCS at the time, decided that Sandra needed her own radio show and moved her in a months time from the Blues show to her own R&B radio show from 10a-3pm.
In 1995, she worked with Michael Hightower on his R&B show at Magic 102.5. Sandra decided to take a break from radio for a couple of years, then she was asked to come back to 1290 WMCS in 2004 and host an evening R&B show from 6p-10p Monday – Friday. In June of 2004, 1290 WMCS switched there format to talk radio and Sandra’s show was moved to a late night. Today, you can listen to Sandra’s "Smooth Grooves" on Saturdays from 6p-10p.
