History

In 1992, the 1290 Scholarship Fund, Inc. (Fund) was founded by WMCS Radio President and CEO, Willie D. Davis and General Manager, Don Rosette.

In its first year, the Fund presented 15 scholarships to deserving students from the Milwaukee area. Increased interest dictated that we do more and we responded by awarding 25 scholarships each year thereafter totaling $40,000.00.

In 2005, the 1290 Scholarship Fund, Inc. was renamed in honor of Willie D. Davis. The Fund has 501 (c) 3 status and all donations are tax deductible. Every dollar goes towards the Fund that is without administrative cost. A wide range of corporate citizens and educators serve as members of the Board of Directors.

Applications are sent out to all Milwaukee County High School Senior Counselors and Principals with the criteria each student must meet in order to apply for the scholarship.

Once applications are submitted back to 1290, a panel of judges, judge and select, from on an average of more than 300 entries, 40 applicants. From these 40 applicants, the 25 final recipients of the scholarship are judged once again, and selected by the Willie D. Davis Scholarship Board of Directors.

Past recipients have gone on to attend colleges and universities such as, Carroll College, Purdue, Howard, Grambling, Harvard, Morehouse, Marquette, UW-Madison, Spelman, UW-Milwaukee, Duke, USC and many more.

Since inception, the Fund has awarded more than $900,000.00 to 440 students. The Fund entering into its 19th year in 2010, will once again confer $50,000.00 to 25 deserving students.
