1290 WMCS Celebrates Black History Month
1290 WMCS celebrates Black History Month. It began as "Negro History Week" in 1926, the observance of Black history in America. It was the brainchild of African American scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson. A national recognition of Black pioneers and the many contributions they made to our nation and the world. Dr. Woodson chose the month of Feburary for the number of great African American pioneers and institutions whose birthdays or launch dates fell within the month. Among these, birthdays of Fredrick Douglass, W.E.B. Dubois, Langston Hughes, Eubie Blake, the NAACP and the first Pan African Congress. The celebration became a month long observance in 1976.
Now during Black History Month, 1290 WMCS salutes past and current contributors through our vignette series, "Pause for Pride". In addition to celebrating noteworthy African Americans on the national scene, past and present, special emphasis is placed on our local pioneers. Tune in everyday as we salute our history-makers. Take a moment and Pause for Pride!

1290 WMCS Presents the 37th Annual Juneteenth Day Celebration
Juneteenth is the oldest commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865 it was on June 19, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with the good news that the war had ended and all slaves were now free! The slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebration.
The celebration contines. Join 1290 WMCS and Northcott Neighborhood House on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. This day of celebration in Milwaukee is observed with an opening ceremony, replete with a parade on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The day long celebration includes live entertainment, public speakers, food and vendors.

The 18th Annual 1290 WMCS/The Salvation Army Christmas Family Feast
December 25, 1990 was the year that 1290 WMVP introduced to our community the Christmas Family Feast. We reached out to one of the finest service organizations in the nation and Milwaukee for assistance, the Salvation Army. They responded with a resounding "yes", and thus, one of our community's best collaborations was formed. A lot has changed in 17 years including the "call letters" of 1290, from WMVP to WMCS but one thing has remained the same.
The Feast is still a free event, and all are welcome to join us for a traditional holiday meal on Christmas Day.
